Consulting & R&D Since the era of impractical philosophers

Practical results, with permission to be delightfully impractical first.

Laputan Research, Inc. is a consulting company named for Laputa, the flying island of philosophers in Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels—a place famous for brilliantly ingenious work that is, at least at first glance, patently impractical.

We like that energy. We explore ideas with just enough rigor to make them real, and just enough whimsy to find what other approaches miss.

“Laputan” is an adjective here, not a residence claim—no islands were harmed in the making of this website. If you’re looking for the long-form archive, head to laputan.org.

Laputa, the flying island A whimsical flying island with gears, balloons, and clouds—an homage to Swift’s Laputa. “Patently impractical pursuits” → occasionally: “unexpectedly practical outcomes.”
